Benny Blanco revealed that he nearly messed up his proposal to Selena Gomez as he opened up about the special moment for Interview Magazine’s March 2025 issue.

The record producer, 36 – who announced a new album with the Emilia Perez actress – joined the former Disney channel star, 32, during a joint interview for the publication. 

The couple glammed up for a series of snaps for the cover story – including one where Gomez posed topless with the Eastside hitmaker in a sultry pH๏τo.  

Benny and Selena sat down with Mel Ottenberg and at one point, he asked questions about the pair’s engagement as well as her marquise diamond ring. 

‘It was the sickest surprise that she had no idea about and it couldn’t have come at a better time because I was starting to f**k up,’ Benny admitted. 

In December, Gomez announced that Blanco had popped the big question following a year and a half of dating.

He added: ‘The thing that makes me so crazy is, you’re getting engaged, and right before, they’re like, “Show me how good of a liar you are. Sneak around and try to do this perfect thing without me knowing.”‘

Benny then said, ‘At the end, she was starting to get upset because she was like, “Why aren’t you coming home tonight?”‘ 

‘And I was like, “Oh, I’m just at my friends’.” I almost did it early. But I nailed it, I think,’ with Selena cutting in to reply with, ‘You did.’  

Two months ago, the Only Murders In The Building actress announced the Blanco had proposed to her during a romantic picnic on a set. 

She posted a series of snaps to her main Instagram page that had captured the special moment.

In one image, the star only showed her left hand to give her fans and followers a close-up glimpse of the eye-catching, marquise diamond ring.

The engagement also pays homage to Selena’s hit 2015 track тιтled, Good For You, where she notably sings the lyrics: ‘I’m on my marquise diamonds / I’m a marquise diamond / Could even make that Tiffany jealous.’

Their discussion with Ottenberg kicked off about the star’s marquise diamond engagement ring, which she has since showed off on social media. 

In regards to choosing the ring to pop the big question with, Blanco expressed, ‘I just tried not to f**k up. That’s all I did.’

He added, ‘She showed me designs and I would always throw little hints. I’d be like, “Yeah, but if I ever made one, would you want it like this?” And then she changed her mind halfway through.’

‘It used to have huge baguettes on the side and then she was like, “I don’t want something that big.”‘

Benny also explained that, ‘So now I have extra baguettes and we’re going to make earrings for her. She basically has three wedding rings.’

However, when asked to give details on how the record producer proposed, Selena shared that they would save that story for their future children.

‘That I want to save for our kids. It was really sweet and the right things were said,’ the star expressed, with Blanco adding that it had been ‘the sickest surprise.’ 

The couple also talked about discovering they had feelings for each other after collaborating on music for years.

‘It was really simple. We got in the studio to work on a song and we just talked; that’s how easy it was for me. I liked him before he liked me,’ Gomez shared.

Benny admitted that he initially didn’t know that the actress liked him and explained, ‘The second time we hung out, our second date, I was like, “Wait, does she like me?” I was clueless.’

‘From then on, it was easy. You know when you think you met the right person, you’re like, “Oh my God.” But it feels so different. The second we started hanging out, I was like, “This is my wife.” I was telling my mom, “This is the girl I’m going to marry.'”

The two stars also discussed how they are each other’s biggest supporters and Blanco gushed, ‘Now I worship the ground she walks on and I feel like she’s the same way to me.’

‘There’s no ego between us. She’s praying for me to win and I’m praying for her to win. And I wake up in the morning – I know she does the same thing – and I’m like, “How can I make her life better?”‘

‘Holding her isn’t close enough. I want to be inside of her whole body. I just feel a thing for her that I can’t even explain. I’m so sappy,’ Blanco further added.

He then added, ‘I’m so scared she’s just going to wake up and be like, “What? No,”‘ and Selena sweetly replied with, ‘You’re stuck with me.’

Along with announcing the LP, the first single Scared of Loving You was released on Thursday.

In regards to creating the album, Benny explained, ‘We also just made it in this house. We weren’t going to a studio every day. I’d be like, “Hey, I have this cool chord thing.” Then she’d come in.’

‘We weren’t like, “Today’s the studio. We’re going to write this song and that.” So many times it was so hodgepodge. It was like two hours here, two hours there.’

‘I’d never worked that way with someone. Usually I work that way if I’m by myself, but it was so cool to be able to do that with her,’ he added.

Towards the end of the interview, Selena briefly talked about her Oscar-nominated film Emilia Perez.

‘It’s transcended into something that’s more of a gift than anything, and I couldn’t be more grateful for it.’

However, the movie has since been embroiled in drama after one of the leading stars Karla Sofia Gascon’s controversial tweets resurfaced.

In regards to her ‘dream role,’ the actress said, ‘I think my goal has always been to find characters that viscerally move me as an actor, especially after this experience.’

‘I don’t need to be the lead. I will never be one of those actors. I just cherish and love filmmaking and storytelling, it’s one of my greatest joys in life.’

Along with posing topless in one image for Interview Magazine, the couple also sported coordinating pin-striped suits in additional pH๏τos. 

Benny dressed up as a knight in shining armor as Gomez leaned in to place her hand under his chin. 

She donned a fitted, long-sleeved black bodysuit that was secured with a black belt that wrapped around her lower waist.

The actress slipped into a pair of sheer, black тιԍнтs as well as closed-toed, black pumps to coincide with the monochromatic color scheme.

The lovebirds struck a few lighthearted poses in the outfits and at one point, she grabbed Benny’s tie as he held a shocked expression on his face.

Selena further showed off her sense of style in a black dress with a plunging neckline which was layered with a fuzzy, brown jacket.

The Eastside hitmaker opted for comfort in a light blue sweatshirt and shorts as he rested on a couch next to Gomez.
