The film is based on the 2022 novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton, with director Bong explaining one key difference between the book and the novel at the panel.
‘It’s based on the novel Mickey 7, but we made it Mickey 17. The number is the number of times he dies,’ the filmmaker previously explained.

Bong is known for a string of now-classic Korean films, including the serial killer–thriller Memories Of murder, the monster movie The Host, and the suspense thriller Mother.
