Sabrina Carpenter reveals which song was inspired by ‘biggest heartbreak’… and it wasn’t about Barry Keoghan

Sabrina Carpenter has revealed her hit song Emails I Can’t Send was inspired by her ‘biggest heartbreak to date’.

The 25-year-old pop star released the acclaimed album in July 2022, and Sabrina has now admitted that the record was inspired by a particularly painful break-up.

The blonde beauty told Vogue magazine: ‘That was my first time really, really getting to sit and steer the whole thing.’

Sabrina – who has previously dated Joshua Bᴀssett, Shawn Mendes and Barry Keoghan – has described the record as her ‘first big-girl album.’

Because the song came out in 2022, it could not have been about Barry because they had not yet started dating.

She was with Bradley Steven Perry from 2014 to 2015. The singer romanced Joshua Bᴀssett in 2020 and she was with Shawn Mendes in 2023.

She did not start dating Barry until 2023; they split in late 2024.

Reflecting on the relationship that inspired the record, Sabrina explained: ‘My biggest heartbreak to date. My first real one.

‘I hate to say that. It definitely makes all my exes before that feel like s***. I don’t mean to do that.

‘I just think in a sense of really understanding the grieving-someone-that’s-alive feeling. I never felt that until this one.’

Meanwhile, Sabrina previously insisted that ‘there’s more’ to her than just hit songs.

The chart-topping pop star believes there’s much more depth to her personality than many people may think. The singer told Paper magazine: ‘There’s more to me than my [hit songs].

‘There’s a person under there that some days feels really confident and some days literally just can’t get out of bed,’ she said.

‘I think that’s really important for people to understand, regardless of who they listen to, that they’re a person.’

Sabrina also confessed to feeling anxious ahead of the release of Short n’ Sweet, her 2024 album that featured hits such as Espresso and Please Please Please.

Sabrina – who starred on the Disney series Girl Meets World between 2014 and 2017 – admitted: ‘I get so scared to share anything.’

The blonde also told Vogue magazine: ‘Short n’ Sweet is absolutely me. There’s no, like, alter ego. But it’s definitely a more emphasized version of me.

‘It’s interesting because I’m able to dress in this way where you would kind of expect to hear like a voice from the ’60s. But then, when I’m speaking to the audience, I’m just myself.’

Sabrina considers ‘Short n’ Sweet’ to be an evolution of ‘Emails I Can’t Send’, her 2022 album that also earned positive reviews from music critics.

However, the singer thinks her current style and lyrics are an even more accurate representation of who she is and how she feels about life.

Sabrina explained: ‘I started wearing outfits that felt more like myself. And then it sort of bled into, like, I was writing these songs that felt more and more like my personality.’

The pop star has admitted to being inspired by ‘strong and hyperfeminine’ figures from the past.

She shared: ‘I remember feeling inspired by images of women that felt very strong and hyperfeminine. And then being like: If only she said what she was actually thinking.’
