Call The Midwife fans ‘in tears’ over heartbreaking death as they brand it the ‘worst thing’ that has happened on the show

Call The Midwife fans have been left upset after the death of a beloved character on the popular BBC show.

The latest episode of the drama, which aired on Sunday, featured the tragic death of Cyril Robinson’s treasured cat, Nigel.

Cyril, played by Zephryn Taitte, first acquired the feline after he found him on a street in Poplar during the Christmas special in 2023.

However, in the latest instalment of Call The Midwife, Nigel’s health sadly took a turn for the worst.

Nurse Rosalind Clifford, played by Natalie Quarry, discovered the ill cat and took him to Cyril, wrapped in a blanket.

‘I need you to last ’til the morning, so I can take you to the vet,’ Cyril said to his beloved pet.

However, by the morning Nigel had pᴀssed away and he was laid to rest in an emotional scene.

‘We were strays together, he had no one and I had no one when we met,’ Cyril said to Fred as they buried Nigel.

Fans of the show flocked to social media after Nigel’s death to express their thoughts.

One posted on X: ‘THEY KILLED OFF NIGEL, THEY’VE KILLED OFF OUR NIGEL WORST THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED ON THIS SHOW … RIP NIGEL.’

Another said: ‘Wasn’t ready or expecting #Nigel the cat to leave us #CallTheMidwife.’

Someone else was in tears after Nigel’s pᴀssing and commented: ‘I haven’t cried that much since Sr Evangelina pᴀssed, #CallTheMidwife #RIPNigel.’

A fourth penned: ‘For all the tears I’ve cried over deaths on #CalltheMidwife, now they go for the cats! Please, not Nigel…’

While a fifth wrote: ‘Nooooo, they killed off Nigel. #CallTheMidwife.’

It comes after viewers broke down in tears as the new series kicked off with a ‘very, very difficult to watch’ premiere last month.

The first episode saw the start of a new plotline following a pregnant teenager called Paula Cunningham (Kitty Anderson).

Paula’s parents Philip and Grace Cunningham think that their daughter has fallen pregnant through immaculate conception – however, that was not the case.

During an honest conversation with midwife Joyce Highland (Renee Bailey), she opened up about what happened.

While the youngster laid in bed, Joyce told Paula: ‘Bodies are strange things, honey. We feed them, we clothe them and we live inside them, but we don’t know them quite as well as we may think.

‘And sometimes, they take us by surprise. And sometimes our bodies want things that we don’t understand, but we can’t run away from.’

Paula replied: ‘I couldn’t run away from Lenny.’

She added: ‘He does nearly the same paper round as me.  Sometimes we walk back down the towpath together.’

The teen then explained that they ‘have a laugh’ and that Lenny has called her ‘one of the lads’.

Joyce asked if the pair were alone down the towpath and Paula explained that’s when they would ‘play fight’.

That is when the penny dropped for the midwife.

Many couldn’t contain their emotion while watching the episode and took to social media.

Call The Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
