Jamie Laing recounts the terrifying moment he discovered he has ‘debilitating’ tinnitus on This Morning – and the common habit that caused it

Jamie Laing shared the terrifying moment he first discovered he suffers from tinnitus as he offered valuable advice for others facing the same condition.

During Thursday’s instalment of This Morning, the Made In Chelsea star, 36, joined Dr Raj Arora to discuss his struggle with the condition, which impacts around 7.6 million people in the UK.

Speaking with hosts Cat Deeley, 48, and Ben Shephard, 50, Jamie recalled the moment nine years ago when he woke up to a ringing sound that wouldn’t go away.

He explained that he thought the noise was coming from somewhere in his house, but then he realised it was actually in his ear.

Jamie has previously compared the noise to a constant high-pitched sound, akin to a dog whistle.

The primary symptom of tinnitus is hearing a ringing or buzzing sound without an external source.

Although the exact cause is unclear, tinnitus is often linked to hearing loss or other conditions such as depression and anxiety.

During the show, Jamie shared how the condition affects him daily, admitting: ‘It is pretty debilitating.’

‘My story is that nine years ago, I woke up one morning and could hear this ringing. So, I searched my whole house then I realised it was in my head.’

He continued: ‘The hard thing about it is no one can see it or hear it, so it’s a very solo problem.’

Jamie described the sound as a ‘high ringing whooshing noise’ that becomes louder the more anxious or tired he feels.

When asked about the possible cause of his tinnitus, Jamie speculated that it was likely due to years of not protecting his ears.

He admitted: ‘I think my thing was I never protected my ears – I went to a lot of nightclubs when I was younger.’

The reality star also shared some helpful tips for those suffering from tinnitus, revealing that listening to white noise, whale sounds, or even the hum of a fan helps him sleep at night.

It comes after Jamie revealed why he is ‘scared to have kids’ with his wife Sophie Habboo, 31, despite them both wanting a baby.

The reality stars tied the knot in April 2023 during a first ceremony in London, and a second one in Spain three weeks later. They have both discussed their desire to have children.

However, on a recent episode of his Great Company podcast, Jamie’s producer Jemima interviewed him, and they discussed why he fears having kids.

Jamie explained: ‘I would really like to have one, but it has been a real long road because I was really scared of babies and I was really scared of commitment.’

‘The idea of not being able to escape something, with work or even divorce, there’s always a way out. But with a baby, there’s no way out. There is no way out because you are committed to that little human forever and that, for me, is really quite scary.’

He went on to add: ‘Still really scary, it is a real fear. To the point where at the start of last year, Sophie thought she was pregnant and I had to leave the restaurant because I was so stressed.’

‘Firstly that is not a good partner. It made me really nervous, but also made Sophie really scared because as a partner you want someone secure and relaxed, and it made her feel uneasy.’

Sophie previously predicted that her husband Jamie would be a disaster when it comes to welcoming children.

Jamie admitted: ‘I’m going to hate it. I really don’t think I am going to handle you being in pain.’

Sophie then suggested she might have someone else present during the birth, such as her mum.

She added: ‘I think you will have to have a Xanax at that point, or something because your anxiety will freak me through the roof.’

‘You will definitely be like, “We are never doing that again.” Because you found it so traumatic. And you will tell my birthing story to everyone for sure.’

This Morning airs weekdays on ITV1 from 10am and is available to stream ITVX.
