Dancing On Ice’s Chris Taylor reveals behind-the-scenes injury battles and admits he’s ‘basically held together by sellotape’ after revealing he had a car accident following debut on ITV show

Dancing On Ice’s Chris Taylor reveals behind-the-scenes injury battles and admits he’s ‘basically held together by sellotape’ after revealing he had a car accident following debut on ITV show

Chris Taylor has revealed training for Dancing On Ice has left him battling a number of minor injuries behind-the-scenes, after he admitted he’d been involved in a car accident after his debut performance.

The Love Island star, 34, remains on the show as it enters its fifth week with new professional partner Robin Johnstone, after his original partner Vanessa Bauer was forced to withdraw due to tearing ligaments in her leg while rehearsing for last Sunday’s show.

But in a new podcast appearance, he admitted that he has also been dealing with his own injuries on the show, as he quipped he is ‘basically held together by Sellotape at the minute’.

Chris also detailed how he suffered a car accident mere hours after his first skating performance, with the driver recognising him from the ITV show.

Speaking about his Dancing On Ice journey on Not My Bagg on Tuesday, he said: ‘It’s an absolute pogo stick of emotions. It’s wild. Ice is my life at the moment until I finish the show.

‘There’s a lot of minor injuries cropping up. I have to go to the physio every week, which is kind of nice – I get a bit of a mᴀssage.

But in a new podcast appearance, he admitted that he has also been dealing with his own injuries on the show, as he quipped he is ‘basically held together by Sellotape at the minute’

‘Sometimes I’m making it up and I’m not in pain. Sometimes I just want a mᴀssage and a bit of a break.’

However, he confessed that he was dealing with more serious issues, explaining: ‘Knee’s flaring up. My arm goes ᴅᴇᴀᴅ – not in a fun way or a good way, it just goes ᴅᴇᴀᴅ during training and then I can’t lift anymore.

‘So they have to fix that. I’m holding it together – I’m basically held together by sellotape at the minute.’

It comes after two other stars were already forced to pull out of the compeтιтion, with comedian Josh Jones bowing out due to injury last month and Paralympian Dame Sarah Storey suffering a broken ankle before the live shows even began.

Chris also detailed his car crash, explaining that it turned out to be a ‘lovely human interaction’, with the other driver even praising his skating.

He recalled: ‘It was actually one the nicest human interactions I’ve ever had in my life though. It was the day after the first Dancing On Ice show.

‘I hit a guy – there was a bit of kerfuffle happening on the left hand side, there had already been a crash. There was a guy on my left and I thought I’m just going to get our your way, but I forgot to look and the guy just came in on the righthand side.

‘The guy got out the car and he went, “You’re Chris!” And I thought oh God I can’t even drive off or get away with giving fake details, I’m going to have be a genuinely good moral person now.

Chris also admitted he had no idea of he could go on to win the show as he didn't have a clue why people were voting for him (pictured with Robin on Sunday)

‘But it was actually a lovely conversation and he was like “Well done yesterday, you skated really well.

‘Anyway we just sorted it out between us and I backhanded him some cash to save going through the insurance. Not actually sure if I should say that or not! Is it allowed?’

Chris also admitted he had no idea of he could go on to win the show as he didn’t have a clue why people were voting for him.

The reality star explained his focus was on ‘just not hitting the deck and surviving Dancing On Ice’.

He went on: ‘I don’t know [if I could win]. I don’t know what people vote on. Like if you look at who went in the first two weeks, Ferne McCann and Chelsee Healey – I’d say like probably more of the well-known people amongst a certain audience.

‘I don’t know what people vote on, like do they vote because they like an outfit, because the person’s fit, because they’re good at skating – I have absolutely no idea! I’m just hanging on by a thread.’

Sunday saw Chris and Robin skate to the Pokémon Theme, but their performance was overshadowed after they lost their footing and tumbled onto the ice before regaining their composure and completing the routine.

Their new partnership came after Vanessa announced her withdrawal from the show in an Instagram video, after suffering a serious injury.

The skater said: ‘I’m here today with rather upsetting news. I am unfortunately not going to be able to continue on Dancing on Ice with Chris.

‘That’s really upsetting for me. I have trained Chris since October last year and it is always such an amazing achievement for myself to see someone else progress so much in a skill they’ve never done before.

‘So it’s been really rewarding for me to watch this whole journey for Chris [and] the way he’s got better week since October and also since the live shows started.’

She added: ‘I unfortunately had a little accident backstage last week on Dancing on Ice just before the live show on Sunday.

‘And I didn’t realise how bad it was then, but we did an MRI and it turned out that I have a completely torn ligament, grade three sprain injury and a major grade two sprain injury.

‘I shouldn’t be skating on an injury like that and so I’m taking all of the advice from the medical professionals here, I am in very good hands.’

Revealing she would be undergoing rehab for her injury, Vanessa added: ‘My pain threshold, I don’t trust it, I have been skating this whole week with a lot of pain but I just didn’t realise that it was such a significant injury so I didn’t voice my pain.

‘It just goes to show that you should listen to your body and try to tune into your body a lot.

‘I don’t want this injury that is already bad to get even worse and so the one sensible decision is to step away, do rehab, focus on my health – I guess mental health as well – because it’s really bad that I have to leave.

‘But I’m excited to get better and to get back to skating properly every single day.’
