As Amandaland hits screens with divisive premiere – just WHERE are Julia, Liz and Kevin? Everything we know about the Motherland favourites and if there’s any chance of comebacks in new BBC spin-off

Amandaland fans are no doubt desperate to know where favourite characters Julia, Liz and Kevin are given their absence from the spin-off series.

The new British comedy series, which is a spin-off of BBC show Motherland, hit our screens on Wednesday evening after the show was confirmed back in May last year.

Amandaland follows the ongoing story of Amanda and Anne’s unusual friendship, which was first explored during Motherland.

Actresses Lucy Punch and Philippa Dunne are joined by the likes of Joanna Lumley, Samuel Anderson, Siobhan McSweeney and Ekow Quartey in the new episodes.

Some that were missing included Anna Maxwell Martin, Paul Ready and Diane Morgan, who played Julia, Kevin and Liz respectively.

Many took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their thoughts.

One said: ‘It’s missing the ‘mother’ of Motherland and her sidekick Kevin. Weird new series, like having left-over from a previous meal…#Amandaland.’

Another added: ‘Yeh I’m missing Julia.’

A third chimed in: ‘Missing the essential ingredient. The Motherland cast.’

‘#Amandaland was everything I expected and more! Lets hope for a series two commission with cameo appearances from Julia, Liz and Kevin,’ a fourth confessed.

A fifth tweeted: ‘Amandaland is funny-ish (it’s Anne’s world and we’re just living in it), but way too vanilla. Could we have Liz, Julia, and Kev back instead of dull Della, Fi, and JJ?’

And it’s bad news for fans as it sounds like they won’t be returning anytime soon.

During a stint on The One Show, presenter Alex Jones asked Motherland star Anna Maxell if it was something that could happen.

Alex asked: ‘Can Julia come and have a little cameo at least, a little coffee?’

Anna told her: ‘No, I don’t think Julia or Kevin or Liz are popping in.’

Motherland premiered in 2016 and went on to have 19 episodes across three seasons.

Amandaland viewers shared their opinions after the Motherland spin-off aired its first episode on Wednesday night – and they all had the same complaint.

The new comedy series shifts focus to Amanda (Lucy Punch), the posh and often overbearing mum, as she navigates a major lifestyle change after her divorce forces her to downsize.

Moving to a new postcode, she reconnects with her former friend Anne (Philippa Dunne) and attempts to blend in with a new school crowd, including laid-back parents Della (Siobhan McSweeney) and Fi (Rochenda Sandall).

However, Amanda quickly finds herself struggling to adapt to her new surroundings.

Adding to the chaos is her ever-present mother, Felicity (Joanna Lumley), who only makes things more complicated.

While the spin-off brought back some familiar faces from Motherland, many viewers felt it lacked the same charm as the original and questioned why the BBC didn’t just continue the beloved series instead.

Taking to X, they shared: ‘#Amandaland not ringing the bell at the moment, not sure the character is strong enough to carry a series – makes you realise what a good ensemble #Motherland was,’

‘#AmandaLand it doesn’t quite have the edge of motherland but that’s more tricky with a single main character,’

‘It’s just not the same is it #Amandaland,’

‘I know it’s episode 1 but it ain’t the same #Amandaland,’

‘This is rubbish, nowhere as good as Motherland #Amandaland,’

‘Not sure I can even watch another one! #awful #dontbother #amandaland.’

Speaking about the series, Tanya Qureshi, Head of Comedy at the BBC said: ‘We can’t wait for audiences to see Amanda’s new chapter, brought to life by such a talented cast and a wonderfully sharp set of characters. It’s going to be a real treat.’

Sharon Horgan, Co-Founder of Merman said: ‘I was genuinely sad having to say goodbye to Motherland.

‘There’s such a fondness for that show and those characters. So it was a real thrill to get to pick up the further adventures of Amanda and Anne, not to mention Felicity.

‘Lucy, Phillipa and Joanna are top of their game in these roles and are joined by an incredibly funny and talented new cast.

‘Can’t wait to showcase the next challenges of parenthood and the very particular kind of friendship the school gates bring.’

Clelia Mountford, also co-Founder of Merman added: ‘We’re delighted to be bringing Amandaland to the BBC and to share the next chapter of Amanda’s story.

‘Viewers are in for a treat! It’s been so rewarding seeing how the complexity of Amanda’s character has developed; the relationship with her mother, life as a single parent and her fledgling career.

‘It’s a joy to be working with such incredible comedy talent such as Lucy, Joanna and Phillipa once more.’

The show was created by Sharon Horgan, Graham Linehan, Helen Serafinowicz and Holly Walsh and also starred Anna Maxwell Martin, Diane Morgan, Paul Ready and Tanya Moodie.

All series of Motherland are available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
