Boy George ‘faces a major career blow as he could lose the trademark to his stage name after his band Culture Club racked up £12million in debt’

Boy George has been hit by a major career blow, as it’s claimed he could lose the trademark to his name after his band racked up £12million in debt.

The Culture Club star, 63, born George O’Dowd, could see the name of his band be stripped away from him after his showbiz company went under.

After trademarking his name in 2014, his license has now expired as documents show he only bought the rights until December 2024, according to The Sun on Sunday.

The protection rights for the band he fronted had also reportedly ran out late last year and the name could get pᴀssed to a finance company.

The band’s iconic back catalogue — featuring chart-toppers like Karma Chameleon and It’s a Miracle — is at the centre of a legal battle that could see it sold to a company with a focus on profiting from classic tracks.

The company responsible for managing the band’s gig earnings, Mispocha Touring, collapsed in 2023.

It was run by George and his fellow Culture Club members Mikey Craig and Roy Hay.

A report revealed that it owed £1.37 million to media finance specialist MEP Capital, and failure to repay the debt would result in the band’s name, Boy George’s name, and their back catalogue being taken from them.

The band also accumulated nearly £12 million in debts, with the majority owed to US concert promoter Live Nation.

Administrators had issued a repayment plan, demanding £500,000 every six months until December 2027.

MailOnline has contacted Boy George’s representatives for a comment.

Meanwhile, Boy George, who entered I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2022 to earn more money, is reportedly renting out his swanky Hampstead home in north London.

He has signed up to the personalised video message site Cameo, where he charges over £320 to record a birthday or anniversary clip.

It comes after the singer confirmed he was leading the line-up of a brand new Australian concert series.

He took to Instagram late last year to announce that he will be heading Down Under as part of the Timeless Summer Tour.

In January, he took to the stage at three different venues around Australia for the whirlwind 2025 stars along with a whole host of very famous names.

George is joining a bumper bill of international stars for the three-date run including Total Eclipse of the Heart hitmaker Bonnie Tyler.

Spandau Ballet’s frontman Tony Hadley and US rockers Starship featuring Mickey Thomas also made up the star-studded line-up.

The tour kicked off on January 24 at Roachford Wines in Victoria’s Yarra Valley before moving to Hope Estate in the New South Wales Hunter Valley on January 25.

The concert series, which debuted for the very first time in 2025, wrapped up at the Stansdtone Point H๏τel in Queensland on January 27.

It was a walk down memory lane for ’80s pop fans, with George promising to belt out his greatest hits on the three-date tour.

As frontman for Culture Club, George was responsible for some of the biggest hits of the decade including Do You Really Want to Hurt Me, The War Song and Karma Chameleon.

Tyler, 73, is world famous for her smash hit tracks including Total Eclipse Of The Heart, Holding Out For A Hero and It’s A Heartache.

Meanwhile, Hadley is recognised for UK new wavers Spandau Ballet’s hits True and Gold, while Starship are most remembered for their ’80s chart-toppers Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now and We Built This City.

‘All of the artists performing at Timeless Summer Live are iconic musicians who have paved the way for many,’ promoter Glenn Meikle said of the inaugural festival.

‘Though they were introduced to the world in the 70s and 80s, their music is just as impactful today as they were when they were released.’
