All episodes of ‘one of the best’ period dramas are streaming for free – as fans rave over ‘Sєxy and spellbinding’ performances

Every episode of ‘one of the best’ period dramas is streaming for free – and fans can’t stop raving about the ‘Sєxy and spellbinding’ performances.

Historical drama series The Spanish Princess aired on American network Starz between 2019 and 2020.

It is based on Philippa Gregory’s 2005 book The Constant Princess and 2014 novel The King’s Curse.

Fans will be happy to know that the show has now been added to streaming service Amazon Prime.

The Spanish Princess, which had 16 episodes across two successful seasons, follows the life of teen princess Catherine of Aragon.

Many loved watching the programme, with Refinery29’s Erin Donnelly writing: ‘This Sєxy, spellbinding follow-up to The White Queen and The White Princess finally gives the charismatic and cunning Catherine her due and provides some much-needed royal herstory.’

The Hollywood Reporter’s Robyn Bahr said: ‘The Spanish Princess is the ideal period soap, dexterously and intelligently balancing the webby intrigue of 16th century court life with the dewy eroticism of a classic melodrama. There’s no guilt here. Just pleasure.’

While the Los Angeles Times’ Lorriane Ali wrote: ‘It’s an elegant and powerful tribute to a queen who’s all too often been defined by the gluttony of her husband but whose influence changed the very fabric of England.’

The show’s synopsis reads: ‘The Spanish Princess returns viewers to the world of Tudor royal court intrigue, continuing the story from the Starz miniseries The White Queen and the Starz limited series The White Princess.

‘It’s told uniquely from the perspective of the women, but it also sheds light on the lives of people of color who were living and working in 16th-century London.

‘Teenage Catherine of Aragon, the strong-willed Princess of Spain, is promised in marriage to the English Prince Arthur.

‘When he dies suddenly, the throne seems lost until she sets her sights on the new heir, the charismatic and headstrong Prince Harry.’

Actress Charlotte Hope took on the role of Catherine of Aragon.

Other stars include Sai Bennett, Alicia Borrachero, Andrew Buchan, Laura Carmichael, Elliot Cowan and Peter Egan.

Charlotte sat down with Vogue Australia and opened up about how she landed the role.

She told the publication that she was ‘so excited’ to audition for it, but was also juggling a play in New York at the same time.

Charlotte explained: ‘I couldn’t audition in a room, so I was making endless tapes, and some of them in Spanish…

‘I did a degree in French and Spanish, and at the end of it, I was like, “Mum, that was a waste of my time. I should’ve just started acting when I was 18.”

‘She was like, “No, it’s so important to have a degree.”

‘And then, it took another seven years before The Spanish Princess.

‘That was the first audition I had to do where I got to use Spanish. So, it did all pay off, I think.

‘But yeah, so I was making these tapes… I was doing a play in New York, so I couldn’t do any screen tests or anything.’

Her agent then told her that she didn’t get the part and admitted she was ‘at peace with it’, as she usually ‘mourns’ a part she doesn’t get.

She explained: ‘And yet, this one, I just was like, “That’s okay, it wasn’t meant for me.”

‘I was weirdly sanguine about it and I don’t really know why.

‘And then two weeks later, they rang me up and… were like… actually, they changed their mind. And then I had to go to Bristol the next day. Yeah, it was crazy.’
