David Tennant has been mocked for ‘looking like all three Top Gear presenters combined’ as he transformed for a scandalous new ITV drama.

The former Doctor Who star, 53, will star in The Hack, which is is a seven-part drama which tells the story of the phone hacking scandal that led to the closure of the UK’s best-selling newspaper.

The series ‘interweaves two real life stories’ as investigative journalist Nick Davies, played by David, uncovers the scandal at the News Of The World.  

It also follows former Met Police Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Cook, played by Robert Carlyle, who is investigating an unsolved murder.

However, following the release of the show’s first-look images, fans took a jibe at the star for his appearance. 

Flocking to social media, fans claimed David looked like Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond all rolled into one.

But David is not starring in a motoring show, instead he will star in The Hack written by the BAFTA, Tony and Olivier award winning screenwriter, Jack Thorne, best known for his work on the Enola Holmes film series.

Coming from the production team behind last year’s Mr Bates vs The Post Office, which triggered a mᴀssive national response, this new show also stars the likes of Robert Carlyle and Toby Jones.

The synopsis reads: ‘Running parallel, the story of the investigation into the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan, led by former Met Police Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Cook (Robert).’

ITV released first-look images from the show, with one showing David looking worlds apart from his usual self as he sported grey hair while he stood in a newsroom. 

Another snap showed Robert on the banks of the Thames across from the Houses of Parliament.   

Also starring in the series is Toby Jones, who plays former Editor-in Chief of The Guardian, Alan Rusbridger.

The cast also includes Rose Leslie, Dougray Scott, Eve Myles, Adrian Lester, Kevin Doyle, Katherine Kelly, Neil Maskell, Lara Pulver, Lee Ingleby and Pip Torrens.

In 2018 David accepted damages and an apology over phone hacking at the News of the World.

The Broadchurch star was among six individuals who settled their claims for misuse of private information and breach of confidence at London’s High Court.

The others were Olympic medallist Colin Jackson, actress Sophia Myles, party planner Fran Cutler, fashion designer Jess Morris and Tanya Frayne, ex-wife of footballer David James.

Counsel Sara Mansoori said that it was agreed that NGN made no admission of liability in relation to their claims relating to The Sun.

David launched legal action March2017  following the scandal and has been awarded substantial compensation.

Leading law firm Collyer Bristow announced at the time that it was representing nine people, including David, who were lodging compensation claims at the High Court in London.

It also follows former Met Police Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Cook, played by Robert Carlyle, who is investigating an unsolved murder

Eddie Irvine, the former Formula One racing driver, was also among the nine claimants. 

Collyer Bristow said its clients had been left with ‘no alternative’ following closure of a compensation scheme.

Rupert Murdoch closed the tabloid News Of The World in 2011 after revelations it had eavesdropped on the voicemails of celebrities, politicians and a 13-year-old murder victim.

Several journalists were convicted, and Murdoch’s company has since paid out millions in compensation.
