Danny Jones reveals he had to ‘check in with the welfare team’ and broke down in tears after winning I’m A Celebrity

Danny Jones has revealed that he had to go ‘check in with the welfare’ team straight after winning I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!

The McFly singer won the hit ITV show last month and explained how he still had the jungle crown on when he realised he need to speak to the welfare team.

During his time in the jungle, Danny was incredibly open about his emotions and mental health as he discussed struggling with anxiety since he was 19 years old.

Speaking on the High Performance Podcast, Danny said he struggled to ‘digest’ the fact that the public had voted for him personally whereas normally he hinds behind his guitar or is with his bandmates, Harry Judd, Tom Fletcher and Dougie Poynter.

Danny said: ‘Do you know what, without getting too emotional now, there was a moment after the show, and I went to check in the welfare team.

‘I’d just been crowned King, and I was on an absolute high, had the crown on still, I hadn’t really connected with anybody on the outside world by this point and she was like “how do you feel being voted?”.

‘I tried to digest it in the best possible way. Normally I’m protected by my vocals and my guitar and my band and McFly, I’m diluted in that because there’s four of us, she just said to me, “so do you feel enough?” And I just burst out into tears.’

Last month, Danny said he felt ‘healed’ after he confided in his campmates about his mental health struggles and his ‘estranged father’.

Speaking on the ITV2 spin-off show I’m A Celebrity: Unpacked, he said: ‘Day five was hard. Going on in my head was “Is this real?” the starvation, the boredom, the hunger.’

‘I tried to take it in my stride and have fun, this is the process, this is what we have to go through.’

‘I’ve had the most overwhelming physically and mentally draining experience and I’ve come out learning something about myself and these guys, it was so interesting and inspiring.’

‘I never thought I would open up with every camera in the world on you. I showed a side I only show my nearest and dearest but I was asked and that is what I’m like when I’m asked those questions.’

‘We don’t talk about that stuff as men, I feel healed because it’s out there and I showed emotion and that’s strength.’

‘I didn’t realise people are going through the same thing, it’s nice to get it out there and it’s out there now and I do feel good for it.’

In an exclusive interview with MailOnline, Alan Jones, 72, believes a bitter divorce from Danny’s mother Kathy tarnished his relationship with his son, who he describes as a ‘lovely lad’ with a ‘heart of gold’.

He claims they had an ‘excellent’ bond throughout the McFly guitarist’s childhood in Bolton and he ‘dedicated his life’ to helping kick-start his successful music career.

The radio DJ, who now lives in Benidorm with his current wife Sharon, has yet to meet his six-year-old grandson Cooper, who Danny shares with his wife and former Miss England Georgia Horsley – but he is holding out hope that ‘one day it will happen’ and that he’ll ‘finally get that pint with his son’.
