He stunned fans and doubters alike by running 30 sand marathons in 30 days last year, breaking a Guinness World Record in the process.

But Spencer Matthews admitted his past hedonistic days indulging in alcohol and causing chaos as the villain in Made In Chelsea often left his parents disappointed.

The TV star, 36, told the Mirror that his mother and father, entrepeneur David Matthews and artist Jane Spencer Parker, were not always best pleased with his antics during his younger years. 

He said: ‘There were certainly times in my life where I was pretty far from where I wanted to be and there was a bit of disappointment behind my parents’ eyes from time to time.

‘But, completing the 30 marathons in the desert changed that and a lot in my life.’

Spencer achieved the extaordinary feat in Jordan last August and already has plans to do seven Ironman-style triathlons across seven continents.

He said: ‘Quite a lot of self-loathing that I carried around with me, and quite a lot of shame, just evaporated after the marathons. It’s a very different way of feeling.’

The entrepeneur was well known for his party boy lifestyle but gave up alcohol in 2018, the same year he married Vogue Williams.

He first developed a problem when working as a city trader, drinking five to ten pints every day before taking clients out.

The hard-partying habits made him an attractive prospect for the Made In Chelsea casting team – and he more than delivered in terms of living the playboy lifestyle.

Often seen knocking back the drinks on the successful Channel 4 show, Spencer’s most iconic moment arguably came when he and Louise Thompson had a very public breakup on Putney Bridge.

In one of the most memorable moments of the Channel 4 show the reality TV star turned entrepreneur, now 34, met Louise on Putney Bridge where they ended their relationship in explosive fashion after his infidelity had come to light.

During the very heated shouting match Spencer said to the now influencer, 34: ‘It’s very hard to respect you when you allow me to cheat on you’.

Reflecting on the scene Spencer explained on Elizabeth Day’s How To Fail podcast last month that he regrets the famous scene, saying: ‘I feel embarrᴀssed about it.’

Around the same time, Spencer came in the firing line from Millie Mackintosh as she slapped him after finding out he cheated on her friend Louise.

Season 3 viewers were left shocked after they witnessed Rosie Fortescue and Millie gang up on Spencer as they blindsided him with information they had learned moments earlier.

The duo had been told by Francis Boulle that he had it on good authority that Spencer had cheated on Louise.

Francis said to them at a Christmas party: ‘I feel if no one else has the balls to say it I feel a duty to Louise as her friend. I need to tell you guys who are her best friends.’

With Louise doing her trademark move of bursting into tears, Spencer tried to shout the girls down but Millie countered with a swift slap.

She hit the perfectly dressed Matthews so hard it knocked his gelled back hair out of place.

Years later, in season seven, the TV star caused more trouble as it was revealed that he and Alex Mytton had a drunken orgy in the week that Binky (Alexandra Felstead) and Alex had split up. 

Binky was left completely distraught as the news was revealed when the group had gotten together to celebrate to hold a surprise party for Stevie’s 25th birthday.

She demanded to hear the truth, Alex said: ‘We both went back to Spencer’s and we hooked with some girls.

As Binky became more and more angry, Alex tried to defend his action as he said: ‘We weren’t together and I was slaughtered.’

The heartbroken beauty then slapped him before she stormed out of the party, leaving Alex to face the judgement of his peers. 

Spencer’s joining the cast of Made In Chelsea when he was 19 – then becoming a regular in the tabloid press due to his ‘antics’ – was frowned upon in his social circles.

‘My family have always loved me but I was the rogue black sheep,’ he said. ‘I was out every night, getting up to God knows what.

‘If my son turned out like I was, I’d lock him in a room somewhere. It would be awful.’

He has since devoted himself to fitness, both through his long-distance running and business ventures which have seen him launch CleanCo non-alcoholic spirits. 

Last week, Spencer revealed that his wife, who he met in 2017, took a dim view of his chances of completing the record-breaking task.

‘Oh my wife was of the opinion, “Well, that will kill you”,’ he admits. ‘My mum wasn’t very happy with me. Nobody was happy, really.’

One of the first things Vogue, who was at home with their three young children ‘holding the fort’ as he was off testing the limits of human endurance, said to him on his return was: ‘Are you ever going to do anything like this again?

‘I said, Well, I’d love to do something like this every year for the next ten years.

‘It was the most amazing thing I’ve done in my life.

‘Vogue said, What?!! Then she kindly requested that the next one doesn’t take 30 days, so I’m going to try to keep it to 20-something.’
