20th Century Studios is moving forward with the long-awaited sequel to the 1997 comedy, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, with original stars Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino inching closer to finalizing negotiations.

The 61-year-old Emmy winner and the 57-year-old Oscar winner will not only reprise their roles as Venice Beach roommates Romy White and Michele Weinberger, they’ll also serve as executive producers on director Tim Federle’s follow-up.

THR reported Wednesday that the studio is ‘eyeing a June start date’ and it will most likely shoot in Los Angeles just like the prior film, which also sH๏τ in Tucson, AZ where the fictional Sagebrush High School was located.

If they time the film to be released in 2027, that would mark Romy and Michele’s 40th high school reunion.

Earlier this month, Lisa gave a promising update while appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show after Mira told People last November that they had signed their deals.

‘She said it perfectly. We’re as close as we have ever been. There’s a script that’s really good. [Original screenwriter] Robin Schiff wrote it,’ Kudrow beamed.

David Mirkin directed the original film that saw two dim-witted, aspiring fashion designers take a road trip to Arizona to attend their high school reunion posing as sophisticated businesswomen who had ‘invented’ Post-it notes.

The nostalgic comedy barely broke even at the box office, earning $29.2M after a $20M budget, but became a beloved cult classic in the years since.

Buzz began for a sequel after the Friends alum and The Goat actress presented a SAG Award together in 2022 while wearing pink and blue pantsuits in homage to their characters.

It’s unclear who else from the cast will return as Janeane Garofalo – who played the chain-smoking outcast Heather Mooney – hasn’t been acting much in the past few years aside from a cameo in Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens and a We Baby Bears voiceover gig.

Alan Cumming – who plays millionaire Sandy Frink – has expressed strong interest in returning to the role, which entailed a hilarious interpretive dance to Cyndi Lauper’s 1984 hit Time After Time.

‘I would love to do a sequel. I have to say, I think the fact that there hasn’t been is a really big example of the misogyny of Hollywood,’ the 60-year-old Traitors host told The A.V. Club in 2023.

‘You know, I think that the things I’ve heard about why, sort of like, “Oh, you know, they’re getting on a bit, older women, blah blah blah.” Terrible. It’s such a popular film. If it was two men in that, you know, two men successful film, we would’ve had six by now.’
