EXCLUSIVEKarren Brady reveals the cult BBC show she turned down this year as she admits to struggling with physically demanding Apprentice filming now she’s in her mid 50s

Karren Brady has revealed the BBC show she turned down this year despite the series becoming a cult favourite among fans across the globe.

Lord Sugar’s trusted aide, 55, told MailOnline she was approached to star in the UK’s first celebrity version of The Traitors but rejected the opportunity because of her intense work schedule.

The West Ham vice chairman, who also sits in the House of Lords, explained while she feels no ‘snobbery’ towards reality TV shows, including the likes of Strictly Come Dancing and I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, she simply doesn’t have the time to compete.

She is able to commit five weeks of the year to The Apprentice because filming for the show takes place in the summer once the football season has come to a close.

Karren said: ‘I was asked to do the celebrity Traitors, but I’ve never seen it. It’s not for me. There’s no shame in doing TV, I have great admiration for people who do television or film.

‘But in my life, I have a full-time job at West Ham, I’m in the House of Lords, I have a number of other interests and boards that I sit on, it’s just not for me.

‘There’s no snobbery from me with reality TV. But I can’t say to my board, by the way I’m doing The Apprentice but I’m then going onto do dancing and the jungle. I don’t believe it’s beneath me.’

Karren also admits if she were to take part in a show like Dancing On Ice, she would be terrified of facing injuries.

She met with Sarah Storey at last year’s Sportswomen of the Year Awards after the Paralympian was forced to withdraw from the ITV show having fractured her ankle.

And Karren says she knows her ‘limitations’, revealing she often struggles with her balance, a result of the five-hour brain surgery she had in 2006.

She said: ‘I was with Sarah that just hurt their ankle very badly on Dancing On Ice at the Sportswomen of the Year Awards where I was a judge.

‘I would be in a cast from head to toe if I was on Dancing On Ice, I have no coordination. I know my limitations.

‘I also have no balance ever since my brain operation. I can’t even walk down the stairs, I am swaying. All of that physical stuff isn’t for me.’

Karren, who joined The Apprentice as Lord Sugar’s right-hand woman in 2010, confessed to struggling with the show’s physically demanding filming schedule now she’s in her 50s.

The grandmother, whose daughter Sophia welcomed her first baby last year, said: ‘When I first came into this show, I was in my 30s. I’m now in my mid 50s. It’s getting tougher for me.

‘When I was in my 30s, I was bouncing around, full of energy but now it’s getting harder.

‘They really are long days. When they say it’s 4am, it really is 4am. Sometimes we start at 4am and we’re not home until 10pm.

‘Halfway through you feel like death warmed up. You are exhausted. I think I’m never doing this again…’

Year after year, Karren does return to the BBC series because of her shared love of business with Lord Sugar, as well as their close working relationship.

But becoming the mogul’s successor one day is not on the cards, vowing she will quit the series the day he steps down.

She said: ‘When he goes, I go. The one thing I would say is that Alan doesn’t have to do the show. He doesn’t need the publicity or the profile, he definitely doesn’t need the money, he does it because he likes it.

‘I like him and that’s why I do it. He does it because he likes helping young people, he likes teaching young people and investing in young people and he likes seeing small businesses take off the ground.’

The businesswoman says she prioritises comfort over style and never wears high heels in the boardroom despite what viewers may think.

She said: ‘I have a few brands that I stick to but the most important thing for me is comfort. If it’s not comfortable, I won’t wear it. It doesn’t matter to me how it looks it has to be warm and comfortable.

‘I never wear high heels. If you look carefully on The Apprentice, all you will see is my trainers in the boardroom. I have a business top but tracksuit bottoms on and white trainers!’

She added: ‘I very rarely wear dresses or skirts, so I tend to have my trainers on all the time and I’m not a jacket person, I don’t like the constrictions, so I wear a jumper normally or shirt.

‘At the end of every series all my clothes go to Dress for Success, my entire wardrobe.’

The Apprentice Series 19 premieres 9pm on Thursday 30th January on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
