Timothée Chalamet poked fun at his lack of award show success in his Saturday Night Live opening monologue. 

The actor, 29, has been nominated for two Academy Awards, three BAFTAs and four Golden Globes – but is yet to win a gong.

As he waits to see his fate this awards season for his Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, Timothée took to SNL hosting duties for the third time. 

In a tongue and cheek opening speech, Timothée revealed that with each award he loses it gets harder to hide his disappointment. 

‘It’s an enormous honour going to these award shows,’ he said. ‘It’s such a great experience but I just keep losing. Each time it gets harder to pretend it doesn’t sting.’

The French-American star proceeded to share a hilarious montage of all the times he has lost at award shows – and the classic close-ups on his face.

Taking to the stage, Timothée said: ‘A Complete Unknown just got eight Academy Award nominations. 

‘I’m truly overjoyed, I was literally crying in my dressing room when I found out because the entire creative team worked so incredibly hard bringing to life the brilliant artist Bob Dylan, the man who’s music and career has become a guiding light to me. 

‘And it’s an enormous honour going to these award shows. It’s such a great experience but I just keep losing. Each time it gets harder to pretend it doesn’t sting. 

‘Let’s take a look,’ Timothée said before showing the film, while at the end he added: ‘Man… just another lonely night with my Dune popcorn bucket.’

He continued: ‘But the most embarrᴀssing part is, I’ve had this sad little speech in my pocket for about four years, that I’ve never gotten a chance to read. 

‘So I was thinking maybe tonight I could read it for everyone here? So um… why doesn’t everyone here just pretend like we’re at an awards show and can I just give you this envelope (hands to audience member) and you just say “And the award goes to…”

The announcement prompts yet another disappointed close-up from the star

While he’s primarily known for his acting—having recently earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown—Timothée also sang in the biopic, so his musical talents weren’t a total surprise.

Still, it was one of his first live musical performances and he knocked it out of the park as viewers were treated to songs written by the legendary artist.

‘You might not know the Bob Dylan songs I’m performing, but they’re my personal favorites,’ Chalamet said in his monologue. ‘And I’m so grateful Saturday Night Live is still doing weird stuff like this 50 years in. They’re either really nice for letting me do this or incredibly mean and this is all a big prank.’

Introduced by Adam Sandler, Timothée kicked off with a raucous rock-and-roll rendition of Outlaw Blues before slowing the tempo for a soulful Three Angels, performed sitting next to James Blake on piano.

Later, he took the stage with a guitar in hand and wowed the crowd with Dylan’s masterpiece Tomorrow is a Long Time.

He officially joined a rare Oscars club with his Best Actor nomination for A Complete Unknown on Thursday.

This follows his previous nomination for the same honour at the 90th Academy Awards in 2018 for Call Me By Your Name.

With this latest nomination, Timothée has secured two Best Actor nominations before turning 30—an achievement last reached by the late, legendary James Dean.

The iconic star, who tragically pᴀssed away at 24 in 1955, was nominated posthumously for East of Eden (1955) and Giant (1956) in the two ceremonies following his death.

Should Timothée win, he’ll make history as the youngest-ever Best Actor winner, besting Adrien Brody’s 2003 record of winning at 29 for The Pianist.
