It’s that time of year again – time for AMC’s Annual Best Picture Showcase movie marathon.
The special event gives fans the chance to watch the movies nominated for Best Picture at the 2025 Academy Awards ceremony.
The two-day event is screening nine Best Picture nominees in select theaters across the U.S.
The only issue is – there are 10 nominees for Best Picture and AMC left Netflix’s Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana movie Emilia Perez not off of the screening list.
The exclusion has caused fans to react in various degrees of hilarity.
AMC Theaters shared the lineup on its official X (formerly Twitter) account and fans immediately noticed that the international movie I’m Still Here was included but Emilia Perez, which garnered 13 nominations including Best Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón, was not.

‘No emilia perez is sending me,’ one user wrote, while another said ‘They are even showing the international feature i’m still here so there’s no international erasure it’s just emilia perez erasure LMFAOOO.’
Someone else wrote: ‘The best part? You don’t have to sit through Emilia Pérez.’

‘So AMC Theaters is doing a best picture nomination 2-day marathon but Emilia Perez isn’t included. Even AMC doesn’t wanna play that s**t lmao,’ someone else joked.
Another broke out the sarcasm to write, ‘It’s awesome that Emilia Perez isn’t in those AMC marathons.’
Many other comments pointed out that Emilia Perez is a Netflix film and was only released in theaters for a limited time to make it eligible for Oscar contention.
And the streamer also has a deal with AMC that reportedly gives them a large share in ticket sales revenue, making the exhibitor less likely to air Netflix films.
Emilia Perez is the most-nominated non-English language film ever and only the third Spanish-language film to receive a Best Picture nomination.
The Los Angeles Times called the movie, ‘A wannabe Mrs. Doubtfire that replaces humor and genius with hubris and guns.

‘No wonder the film nabbed so many Oscar nominations: Academy members are always going to want their cinematic Mexico to be a pitiable hellhole in need of salvation and a reminder to change its errant ways, a trope that goes back to the days of Manifest Destiny.’
Slate called the film, ‘The most fascinating movie I’ve watched in the last year, in entirely negative ways. Its 132 minutes unfold like a glittering and garish tour de force of disaster, a relentless procession of terrible ideas, terribly executed.
‘It’s also the precise sort of preening cinematic onanism that Hollywood types like to think of as visionary, which is the reason the film’s Golden Globes triumph was just followed by a leading 13 Oscar nominations from academy voters.’
Emilia Pérez currently has a 76 percent fresh rating from the most prestigious critics surveyed by Rotten Tomatoes, but the film has a paltry 31 percent rating from audience members who bothered to leave a review on the site.
The film has made history after its lead Karla Sofía Gascón became the first openly transgender actress to earn a nomination at the Oscars, but the film has also been blasted by some critics and viewers who found Emilia Pérez to be transphobic.
That particular criticism was primarily leveled at its writer and director, French filmmaker Jacques Audiard.
Karla faces heavy compeтιтion as she will be up against Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance) and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here).
In the film, Karla portrays тιтular character Emilia Perez who is a cartel leader who enlists in the help of unappreciated lawyer Rita Mora Castro (played by Zoe Saldana) to help fake her death so that she can finally live authentically as her true self.

In addition to Karla and Zoe, the film also stars Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz as the film follows their four remarkable characters as they each pursue their own happiness in Mexico.
The film has some tangled origins. The French production is based on director Audiard’s opera libretto of the same name, which was in turn loosely adapted from Boris Razon’s 2018 novel Écoute.
Chief among its many themes is sisterhood and in his first acceptance speech of the Golden Globes, Audiard declared: ‘I don’t have sisters so maybe this is why I made a film about sisterhood. If there were more sisters in the world, it might be a better place.’
Major female players in Hollywood have championed the film with Meryl Streep praising the movie and Gomez’ performance in particular, describing it as ‘beautiful, smudged, sensual, incredible.’
