Award-winning BBC comedy ‘axed before its time’ returning to screens for brand new series – but there’s a problem for diehard fans

An award-winning BBC comedy that was axed is set to return to screens for a brand new series – but fans may be disappointed.

Paranormal sitcom Ghosts came to an end in 2023 after five series and starred Charlotte Ritchie, 35, as Alison Cooper and Kiell Smith-Bynoe, 35, as Mike Cooper.

The story line followed Alison and Mike after they moved into a family house haunted by a chaotic array of supernatural beings.

However, it has been revealed that the popular programme is set to be recreated, but not in the UK. Instead, the brand new show, Ghosts Australia, will air Down Under.

It will be recorded in Perth and have a ‘unique cast of characters,’ a completely different setting to Surrey – the filming location for the much-loved UK show.

The series will air on Paramount+ and Network 10 later this year and will follow lovebirds Kate and Sean, who move into a haunted mansion after Kate inherits the countryside property.

It sees them navigate their relationship, six ghosts and an attempt to refurbish the manor into a boutique H๏τel.

Kate gains the ability to see ghosts after a near-death experience in an interesting twist.

The Australian show will be produced this year by BBC Studios Productions Australia and Screenwest.

Kylie Washington, General Manager and Creative Director, BBC Studios Productions Australia said: ‘We’re excited to bring to life with a unique cast of characters that reflect our very own history and culture.

‘Western Australia will provide the perfect backdrop for all their comedic antics and we’re grateful to Screenwest for their support.’

Rikki Lea Bestall, Screenwest CEO, said: ‘Ghosts has entertained audiences all around the world, and we’re so pleased to welcome Network 10, Paramount+ and BBC Studios Productions Australia to Western Australia for the Australian series.

‘The production will kick off what is set to be an exciting year for the WA screen sector, creating a slew of opportunities for Western Australians.’

It comes after it was revealed earlier this month that the UK show is set to be made into a movie after the script was ‘given the green light’.

It is believed that both Charlotte and Kiell will join the new film in a further positive development for fans.

An insider told the Daily Star newspaper’s H๏τ TV column: ‘A film has been written, and it’s been given the green light.

‘Everyone involved is really excited that Ghosts will be on the big screen.

‘It’s hoped that most of the original cast will be able to reprise their roles.

‘Producers have already signed up a few of them, and they’re in talks with the others. They think it’ll be a dream cast.’

The British sitcom of Ghosts provided laughs around every corner over the course of its four years and five seasons, and was written and performed by the collective Them There, the group behind Horrible Histories and Yonderland.

The hit show was controversially pulled in 2023 after the series five Christmas special A Christmas Gift, which saw Alison and Mike persuaded by the ghosts to sell their home to a H๏τel company to prevent them haunting their newborn daughter Mia.

A flash-forward revealed to viewers that the couple returned to the converted house to stay in their ‘usual suite’ and reunite with their spooky friends.

After its finale, Ghosts won a Broadcasting Press Guild Awards for Best Comedy, beating Such Brave Girls, Extraordinary, Dreaming Whilst Black and Inside No.9 to the gong.

The Christmas special still proved a sad goodbye for the popular comedy, with fans bitterly disappointed that the show was being discontinued.
