Gladiators star Apollo left ‘very worried’ after being ‘harᴀssed on set by sinister stalker’ as BBC bosses ‘increase security and call in police’

Fury

Gladiators star Apollo has reportedly been harᴀssed by a female stalker while filming the hit BBC show in Sheffield, with bosses calling in the police to investigate.

Apollo, whose real name is Alex Gray, 33, is said to have been left ‘very worried’ after being targeted while shooting at the city’s Utilita Arena, as well at his rented flat nearby and during a meet and greet with fans, as reported by The Sun.

The former England rugby star told the publication: ‘There was an incident. That’s as much as I can say, until something comes of it and there’s action taken. Maybe there might not be. I’m still waiting to hear. The police are doing their thing.’

It’s understood bosses have arranged extra ‘support and protection’ around the arena and the apartments rented for the stars during filming with cops called due to the incident being ‘more sinister than a case of over-zealous fans’.

A source said: ‘The police are investigating. No one has been arrested at this stage. On one occasion a woman was particularly threatening and it was strongly felt the matter needed reporting to the police. Alex was left very worried.

‘It was decided the police should be informed as it felt like a serious case of stalking.’

MailOnline have contacted BBC for comment.

Privately schooled Apollo started out as a Rugby player, signing up for the Newcastle Falcons when he was 17.

He briefly played for England Sevens and then tried out American Football – even making it to the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons.

The BBC reboot returned to TV on Saturday but viewers were quick to slam it’s ‘cheesy’ locker room scenes as well as Apollo’s ‘cringe worthy acting’.

Following the challenges cameras captured the resident bodybuilders and gymnasts returning to their dressing room, with viewers begging for the segment to be scrapped.

During the show, Apollo furious at his own performance, threw his water bottle across the room in anger, but those at home branded it embarrᴀssing.

Taking to X they said: ‘They have kept the locker room scenes, so cheesy’: ‘the acting in the locker room is so cringe’: ‘Still doing this s*** locker room cam are we?’: ‘Wish they’d ditch the locker room s***e’.

But later in the show viewers the series had been ruined after it was announced a fan favourite had been forced to quit the compeтιтion.

Hosts Bradley and Barney Walsh revealed Nitro, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, had been left injured during training.

The studio audience went wild as the muscle bound Gladiator and GB sprinter, 36, was introduced and quipped he was simply ‘too powerful’.

‘Sometimes I’m too powerful. And I ended up hurting myself. I’ve got a little bit of a dodgy knee’.

He continued: ‘But these things happen in sport, you know, when you’re pushing yourself as hard as you do.

‘The pecs aren’t going anywhere – they’re right here. They’re staying here.

After smashing back onto screens last year followed by a celeb special, the iconic series is back for a second series.

The show, which originally aired on ITV from 1992 to 2000, returns with Bradley and son Barney hosting, with a new pair of Gladiators joining the ranks.

The fearsome group includes trained rugby players, accomplished swimmers, sprinters and powerlifters as well as a former Premier League referee.

Bionic

At a towering 6ft 6in it’s somewhat inevitable that bodybuilder Matty Campbell is back as Bionic.

As a child he used to sprint and play football, reaching Academy Level, but a car accident curtailed his professional ambitions. It was his subsequent rehabilitation that led him to finding an alternative outlet in the gym.

Despite having never previously been a regular visitor to the gym, he found that he had a natural ability and quickly started gaining muscle-mᴀss, leading to his eventual love of bodybuilding.
