Beloved Channel 4 comedy with 100% Rotten Tomatoes score confirms it’s ending this year with final series – as creator pens emotional message to fans

One of Channel 4’s most beloved comedies will draw to a close this year and its creator has issued an emotional message to fans.

The hilarious series landed in 2022 with a popular opening run consisting of six half-hour-long episodes, which saw it gain a flawless 100 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Big Boys then returned for a second season, which went down just as well with critics and viewers alike, with fans citing its snappy script and the actors’ comic timing.

The series followed university students Jack, played by Dylan Llewellyn, and Danny, played by Jon Pointing, as they negotiated the ups and downs of campus life.

The pair formed a valuable friendship at Brent Uni against the odds and the series was praised for its exploration of mental health and LGBTQ+ issues.

Ahead of the airing of its third and final season in February, the comedy’s creator and narrator Jack Rooke penned an emotional statement about the show’s history and development.

He said: ‘Ten years ago, I took a rather ramshackle comedy-theatre hour about grief and friendship to a damp cave at the Edinburgh Fringe and never thought a decade later it’d be a silly, sweet lil sitcom about a lad’s lad and a dweeby gay becoming best mates.

‘My therapist (a close lesbian friend) suggested that Big Boys is subconsciously about me not being able to say a proper goodbye to certain people or periods of my life, and so to give this show a final send-off is a huge honour.

‘I’ve known the ending since the pilot, and I hope it still represents those first Edinburgh shows, but also the collaborative genius of our incredible cast, crew and creative team.

‘I’ll be indebted to them always for giving me the funniest, happiest years making Big Boys 1-3. Thank you!’

Jack collected a BAFTA for Best Comedy Writer in 2024 following the success of the sitcom.

After the show’s side-splittingly funny second season, viewers took to social media to heap praise on the series.

One X user said: ‘Absolutely love this show. Bring it on. Sad it had to end though.

Another amused viewer posted: ‘Big Boys (channel 4 I think) is hideously good.’

And a third added: ‘Watching Channel 4’s Big Boys and I have cried at least 7 times already.’

The farewell season promises more hysterical twists and turns as students Jack and Danny enter their third year at the university.

Big Boys has also followed Peggy and Shannon throughout their journey and the new series will see them enter fresh romances and even negotiate nappy changes.

The boys, meanwhile, will struggle to balance their dating and partying with impending ᴅᴇᴀᴅlines and dissertation work.

Jack and Danny will also come to terms with the departure of Louis Walsh from The X Factor which shakes them to the core.

Big Boys is available to stream on channel4.com now.
