Demi Moore set to continue her awards season success with BAFTA nomination as she leads resurgence of older female actresses receiving recognition

Demi Moore is set to continue her awards season success after she received her first BAFTA nomination on Wednesday.

The actress, 62, who picked up her first acting accolade ever at the Golden Globes for her role in The Substance has been nominated for Leading Actress at the prestigious awards.

During her acceptance speech at the Globes, the mother of four said: ‘Thirty years ago, I had a producer tell me that I was a “popcorn” actress and that I could do movies that were successful but I couldn’t be acknowledged. But tonight I learned, I do belong.’

And as Demi finally begins to receive the recognition she deserves, the star appears to be leading the way in a resurgence of older actresses who have also made the nominations list.

Jamie Lee Curtis is up for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Last Showgirl, while Isabella Rossellini has also made it into the same category for her role in Conclave.

While Pamela Anderson failed to be recognised in her glorious return to the silver screen, Jamie, 66, is up for the award after playing cocktail waitress Annette in the drama.

Meanwhile Isabella, 72, stars as Sister Agnes in the adaptation of the Robert Harris novel of the same name, which focuses on the hypothetical behind-the-scenes story of what happens at the Vatican after the Pope dies.

Elsewhere in the Leading Actress category, Demi will go head to head with Emilia Perez star Karla Sofía Gascón and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.

The Spanish drama has received 11 BAFTA nods after sweeping up 10 gongs at the Golden Globes earlier this month.

Karla, 52, plays the film’s тιтular character, a cartel leader who pretends to die in order to undergo a gender transition into a woman.

Marianne, 57, has also been nominated for her role as Pansy Deacon in Hard Truths.

Demi seemed to have an incredible comeback year in 2024, however the Ghost star has always been a Hollywood icon after she made magazine history in 1991.

The star posed naked on the front of Vanity Fair while pregnant with her second daughter Scout.

The image would inspire countless imitators and helped to destigmatize pregnant bodies.

Later, after appearing in the hit supernatural romance Ghost in 1990, she went on to appear in A Few Good Men (1992), Disclosure (1994) and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame (1996).

She made a repeat appearance a year later in 1992 for her Vanity Fair Birthday Suit cover, in which she appeared totally ɴuᴅᴇ but decorated with a body paint suit.

Demi became a global star after starring in Ghost, with her androgynous look – from the dungarees to the short hairstyle – helping to define 1990s style.

She also proved her acting chops in meatier 1990s films such as blockbuster courtroom drama A Few Good Men opposite Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson.

She said on stage: ’30 years ago, I had a producer tell me that I was a popcorn actress.

‘At that time I made that mean that this wasn’t something that I was allowed to have, that I could do movies that were successful, that made a lot of money, but that I couldn’t be acknowledged.

‘I bought in, and I believed that, and that corroded me over time, to the point where I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it – maybe I was complete, maybe I’ve done what I was supposed to do.’

It was at that ‘low point,’ Demi said, that she received the script for The Substance which she called ‘magical, bold, courageous, out of the box [and] absolutely bonkers.’ ‘The universe told me that you’re not done,’ she added.
